June was a glorious hodgepodge for me, the first six albums here representing five different nationalities, and a variety of styles. A few of these albums were by badass women rockers from the 90s or earlier, and overall there’s a good mix here of established bands and newcomers…
Along with the blog, here’s a playlist of some of my favorite songs from June!
Wolf Alice, Blue Weekend
May 2021 was an overwhelmingly good music month, spearheaded by a handful of highly anticipated albums that lived up to, and in some cases surpassed, my lofty expectations for them. The first one here is my Album Of The Year so far!

Allison Russell, Outside Child
Time for the April roll call! I’ve got a bunch of indie rock favorites this month, and beyond that it’s a hodgepodge of West African music, French-language music, rap, folk, post-rock, and one exceptional album of New Age choral music. This month, unlike the rest of 2021, favored more established artists.
I focus on original music in this blog, but should mention that Tom Jones and Rhiannon Giddens both made wonderful covers albums too.
Along with the blog, here’s a playlist of some of my favorite songs from April.
The Coral, Coral Island
A complete 180 from my first two rock-focused months of 2021, my March centered largely on the neighborhood of soul music, though there’s still quite a good mix here, and an exceptional folk album at the head of the class!
To go with the blog, here’s a playlist of some of my favorite songs from March.
Valerie June, The Moon And Stars: Prescriptions For Dreamers
My top favorite albums of February were all of an adventurous, experimental nature. I also had a lot of highlights from the UK and from Australia. Like last month, most of these albums are from brand new bands/artists or from very established ones — not much in the middle. It was a very strong month overall, and 2021 is a wonderful music year so far.
In addition to the blog, here’s a playlist of some of my favorite songs from February.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, L.W.
If the last month is any is any indication of 2021 as a music year, we’re in for good times. My favorites this month were split between very new bands who’ve only made an album or two, and established artists I’ve loved for decades — not much in between. There’s a pretty good international spread here, with at least 8 countries represented.
I’ve also made a playlist of some of my favorite songs from January.
Shame, Drunk Tank Pink
67. Kevin Morby, Sundowner
Pulling back on the rock and roll and mostly setting his piano aside, the LA-based singer/songwriter focuses on a heartfelt, acoustic guitar-driven set. Highlights: “Provisions,” “Jamie,” “Don’t Underestimate Midwest American Sun”
68. Kali Uchis, Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios)
34. Homeboy Sandman, Don’t Feed The Monster
The Queens indie rapper’s latest is at once a profoundly forthright, confessional odyssey of self-discovery and a quirky, laid back rap album with a ton of character and humor. Highlights: “Waitin’ On My Girl,” “Alone Again,” “Monument”
35. Nadine Shah, Kitchen Sink
The Music of 2020 felt like divine intervention. In a year so universally challenging, Music rose to the occasion and presented a vast array of unforgettable records that will long outlive this pandemic.
As usual I listened to about 500 albums this year, reviewed about 200 of them, and now I have distilled from those my Top 100.
And it really was an amazing year for Music. This year’s top 25 albums, for example, share a standard of quality on par with most years’ Top 10. I love 50 albums this year as much as I loved my top 20…
The most prominent theme of my favorite November albums is that whatever genre they’re in, they’re mostly on the indie / underground side of that genre. Ultra-prolific psych rockers King Gizzard dominate this month for me. But it was also an excellent month for rap.
